Do you need a mobile app, or is a website enough? 5 questions to ask first

Contents
“Our competitor has an app, so we need one too” — we hear this a lot. An app can be genuinely useful, but it costs more than a website, takes longer to build and needs constant updates. So first, answer the questions below honestly.
1. How often do customers come back to you?
This is the most important question. People only install apps they use regularly: taxi, banking, delivery, a training centre’s student portal.
If a customer needs you once or twice a year (say, for renovation or furniture), they won’t install an app — or they’ll delete it straight away. In that case a good website and a Telegram bot will do far more for you.
2. Which phone features do you need?
An app can do things a website can’t:
- send push notifications (“your order is on its way”, “class starts in 10 minutes”);
- track location continuously via GPS;
- work with the camera, scanners and Bluetooth devices;
- work offline.
If you need none of these, you probably don’t need an app — you need a website that works well on phones.
3. Would a Telegram bot be enough?
In Uzbekistan almost everyone uses Telegram. A bot can take orders, book appointments, accept payments and send notifications — and the customer doesn’t install anything. For many businesses a bot becomes a cheap, fast “first version” of an app.
Once the bot proves that customers use it and you need more features, moving to an app makes sense.
4. Who will maintain the app?
Releasing an app is only half the job. New versions of Android and iOS come out every year, App Store and Google Play rules change, and users report bugs. You need a developer or a team looking after it on an ongoing basis.
When budgeting, count not just the build cost but also ongoing support.
5. How will you get people to install it?
Being in the store doesn’t bring downloads by itself. You need to promote the app and tell customers why they should install it: a discount, bonuses, easier ordering, faster service. That needs a plan and a budget too.
In short
- You need an app if customers come to you several times a week or month and you need phone features (notifications, GPS, camera).
- A website and a Telegram bot are enough if customers come rarely or you are still testing the idea.
Today apps are built with Flutter or React Native — one codebase for both iOS and Android. This noticeably cuts cost and time.
