SMM on Instagram and Telegram: a practical plan for small businesses

Many business owners think SMM means “posting something every day”. The page fills up, but customers don’t come. SMM is about bringing trust and sales through your page. Here is a simple plan that works for small businesses.

Step 1. Know who you are talking to

Write one sentence: “Our customer is …”. For example: “mothers in Tashkent looking for an English course for their child”. That sentence becomes the guide for every post, image and ad.

If you don’t know who your customer is, you write for everyone — and appeal to no one.

Step 2. Pick the right platform

  • Instagram — for products and services you can show: clothing, food, beauty, interiors, education. Reels and strong visuals matter here.
  • Telegram channel — for news, useful tips, prices and promotions. Telegram is the most popular messenger in Uzbekistan, and messages reach customers directly.

You don’t have to run both at once. Do one well, then add the second.

Step 3. Make your profile sell

A new visitor should understand in 3 seconds who you are, what you offer and how to reach you.

  • a clear avatar (your logo or your face);
  • a bio that says what you do and in which city;
  • a phone number, Telegram or website link;
  • Highlights with prices, work samples, reviews and your address.

Step 4. Content plan: 4 types of posts

Three or four good posts a week beat an average post every day. Split your posts into four types:

  1. Useful — advice that solves your customer’s problem.
  2. Trust — results of your work, before/after, customer reviews.
  3. Process — how the work gets done, your team, behind the scenes.
  4. Sales — an offer, a price, a promotion and a clear call to action: “DM us”, “tap the link”.

Only sales posts get tiring; only useful posts don’t sell. You need a balance.

Step 5. Reply to every message fast

The biggest loss in SMM is unanswered messages. Someone asks for a price, gets a reply an hour later — and by then has already bought from a competitor. Agree in advance who answers messages and how quickly.

Step 6. Start ads with a small budget

Organic reach grows slowly, so you will need ads. But don’t bet big on day one:

  • pick your best-performing post and promote it with a small budget;
  • watch the results for a few days: how many messages and leads came in;
  • scale up the ads that work and switch off the ones that don’t.

Step 7. Count leads, not likes

Followers and likes feel good, but they don’t pay the bills. Every month, write down:

  • how many messages came from Instagram and Telegram;
  • how many of them became customers;
  • how much one customer from ads cost you.

These numbers will show you clearly which content and which ads actually work.
